Thinking through multipliers: Learning from BBC relocation

arrow down

09:15 – 10:00 Wednesday 12th February

Policymakers want to understand the direct and indirect effect of policies on the local economy. Multipliers are one way of capturing the way that increased employment or spending in one part of a local economy spills over to other parts of the local economy.

Hear from Dr Max Nathan, Professor of Economic Geography at UCL and an Associate in CEP’s Urban Programme, on the multipliers arising from the relocation of the BBC to Salford and the way this differed across economic sectors. We’ll also have an overview of the evidence behind income multipliers from our Deputy Director of Evidence, Victoria Sutherland, in advance of a new evidence briefing on income multipliers. This will complement our existing evidence toolkit on employment multipliers.

After these presentations, we’ll have time for questions.

These short 45-minute sessions introduce the evidence on local growth policy and highlight the key issues to consider. These sessions are aimed at policymakers who want to make good use of evidence but are pressed for time.
