A short workshop by What Works Growth with practical exercises to support using evidence in policy design and delivery

Using evidence is an essential part of good policymaking. But not all evidence is created equal. This introductory training is designed to help people working in local economic growth assess and use evidence more effectively at every stage of project development.

By the end of the training, attendees will:
  • Understand how to use of evidence in policymaking and the role of questioning evidence.
  • Be able to make the case to others about why and how evidence is valuable for project delivery.
  • Feel more confident probing evidence as to whether it’s useful and good quality
What sort of training is this?
  • It’s a short interactive workshop with a mix of presentations and practical exercises to review the use of evidence in policy design and delivery.
Who should attend?
  • People working within local authorities, combined authorities and LEPs.
  • Whether you’re new to economic development or have years of experience, the course will give you a good grounding in using evidence in your day-to-day role.
  • We encourage you to attend with your colleagues.
  • If you’re not attending with colleagues, we’ll buddy you up with people from similar organisations for follow-up support.
How do I prepare?
  • No prep work is required, but we recommend that you think about the evidence that you and colleagues use day-to-day. What sources do you use? How do you choose what evidence you rely on? How is it presented?
What happens once I’ve signed up?
  • You will receive a link to join the workshop a few days in advance.
  • We’ll send you resources you’ll need for the exercises shortly before the workshop. You can access these online or print them out.
  • If you’re worried you haven’t received these emails, please contact m.streb@whatworksgrowth.org.
What happens after the workshop?
  • We’re keen to help you implement what you’ve learned in your day-to-day. We offer support after the course to attendees including resources you can share with colleagues; opportunities to share progress with local government officers in organisations like yours; and additional activities such as ‘refresher’ sessions.
