A short 45 minute session on the role of employer investment in skills policy and why it matters for local growth.
The skills gap is not a new issue. Many places have already been working on better aligning skills supply and demand. But with the productivity growth, the Industrial Strategy, AI, green transitions, and devolution all depending on a skilled workforce, upskilling and training are extremely important to get right.
Despite the clear role of skills in supporting economic growth and productivity, evidence shows that employer investment in training remains insufficient. Why are employers not investing enough in training, and what can places do to incentivise greater investment in the local workforce?
In this 45-minute session, we will draw on international examples to explore what works in encouraging employers to invest in skills. We will highlight key lessons and consider how policymakers and local leaders across the UK can apply these insights to their respective regions, particularly drawing from the report Skills for growth: what the UK can learn from international approaches for incentivising employer-based training.
